This session will provide an overview of the bootcamp, highlight the goals of the bootcamp, and set the stage for an engaging and informative experience in the world of high-performance computing (HPC).
In this session, participants will be introduced to the transformative field of high-performance computing (HPC). The session will cover the history of HPC, explore the role of HPC in advancing science and technology, and offer a glimpse into the cutting-edge resources available at the supercomputer facilities housed at the Department of Energy national laboratories.
Learn about the challenges, innovations, and opportunities shaping the HPC landscape, and discover how these powerful systems are driving breakthroughs in research and industry. Kevin, who is an early career scientist, will share a bit about his personal journey into the world of HPC, offering insights and inspiration for those just starting their own paths in this exciting field.
Paige Kinsley will provide an overview of the hands-on projects that participants will engage with during the bootcamp. This session will outline the objectives, structure, and expected outcomes of the projects, giving participants a clear understanding of how these activities will deepen their knowledge of high-performance computing (HPC) and enhance their practical skills.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet with their Peer mentors and Project leads to develop a deeper understanding of their respective projects. This time is dedicated to the participants.

Rebecca Hartman-Baker will introduce the foundational concepts of parallelization, a key principle in high-performance computing (HPC). This session will cover the basics of breaking down computational problems into smaller tasks that can be executed simultaneously, highlighting the benefits and challenges of parallel computing. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of how parallelization accelerates scientific discovery and computational efficiency.
During this panel, you will hear from Argonne National Laboratory computing interns as they share their experiences, challenges, and successes. This interactive panel provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into the national lab internship experience and learn about potential pathways for getting involved in HPC research in undergrad and beyond.
Explore the cutting-edge resources of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) at Argonne National Laboratory. Participants will have the unique opportunity to see Aurora, one of the world’s first exascale supercomputers, the ALCF Visualization Laboratory, home of the Active Mural, a 27-foot by 8-foot interactive display, and the Rapid Prototyping Lab, a space where researchers develop hardware and software solutions to build autonomous labs.
In this talk we will discuss research at University of Chicago to develop trustworthy and explainable digital biomarkers to understand the molecular origin and potential treatments for subtypes of human tumors.
Learn the fundamentals of data visualization and its critical role in interpreting and communicating complex datasets. This session will introduce key concepts, tools, and techniques, with a focus on using Python for creating impactful visualizations. Participants will explore how Python libraries, such as Matplotlib and Seaborn, can transform raw data into meaningful visual representations, empowering them to analyze and share insights derived from high-performance computing (HPC) applications.
Learn the basics of regression analysis, a foundational statistical method used to model relationships between variables. This session will explore how regression techniques are applied in artificial intelligence (AI) to make predictions, uncover patterns, and optimize models.
