Program History
The Intro to HPC Bootcamp began in 2023 as a multi-laboratory collaboration to introduce HPC concepts to students. The inaugural bootcamp was held in Berkeley, California, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The 2023 program was supported by the Exascale Computing Project, as part of the ECP Broadening Participation Initiative, and in partnership with Sustainable Horizons Institute. The 2025 program will occur outside Chicago, Illinois near Argonne National Laboratory, supported by the ALCF division at Argonne National Laboratory. The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (ORNL) are organizing partners for the Intro to HPC Bootcamp.
Mission, Vision, and Goals
Our mission is to create inquiry-based experiences that demystify the world of high-performance computing. We seek to provide foundational skills for future innovation through mentored training, collaborative projects, and research group presentations. Our vision is a world where the next generation of computational scientists confidently ask questions and seek out scientific challenges using the tools of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. Our goals are to increase understanding of the basic concepts of high-performance computing including parallel processing, cluster computing, and model building to students from all backgrounds and experiences. We value lifelong learning, varied perspectives and experiences, and supportive environments where creativity flourishes.
