Project 9: Understanding and Optimizing Energy Usage from HPC Centers

This project focuses on understanding and optimizing energy efficiency in High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities, addressing the significant energy demands of modern computing systems.

Project Description

As high-performance computing systems grow in scale, their energy consumption and environmental impact become increasingly important. This project focuses on analyzing energy usage, carbon footprint, and sustainability metrics in HPC environments.

Participants will investigate power consumption data, estimate carbon emissions associated with compute workloads, and explore strategies to reduce energy usage while maintaining performance.

The project emphasizes green computing practices, helping students understand how to design more sustainable scientific workflows.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand power and energy metrics in HPC systems
  2. Estimate carbon footprint of computational workloads
  3. Analyze tradeoffs between performance and energy efficiency
  4. Identify strategies for reducing energy consumption
  5. Communicate sustainability insights using data visualization
