Participant 2023

Institution: University of Puerto Rico

Where are you from?
San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

What are your academic/technical/or energy justice interests?
Academically, I am interested in computer science topics such as computer science education, cybersecurity, and networks. I will be taking a course in high-performance algorithms in the fall, so I am excited about this boot camp. I live on an island with plenty of sun and wind all year, yet renewables provide less than 3% of energy. I am interested in projects that make renewable energy affordable to more sectors of the population. This is of particular importance since Puerto Rico suffers from high poverty and unemployment rates, and a big part of a family budget goes toward electricity

Do you have any hobbies?
Computers, reading, swimming, music.

What are you most excited about for this program?
Learn as much as possible about how I can use computer science to further projects/ideas on my island so that most of our energy comes from renewables and how CS can help solve or deal with some of the issues that come with it, such as managing the complete lifecycle which includes dealing with waste and recycling.
